If you are looking for a beachside town on the Sunshine Coast with a population of under 10,000 people and a beach on one side and a 25-million-year-old volcanic dome of a mountain on the other, go and look at Coolum. The first Europeans who did were castaways and shipwrecked sailors in 1823, and the first land selection was a pastoral lease in 1871. Grainger Ward farmed 300 head of cattle, and then 10 years later Mark Blasdell planted sugarcane and cut timber. In 1905 William Perry-Keene built a home called Green Hills, and after that many more people came to live in the region. Soon there were a mailboat service, a horse-drawn tram, and punt-loading facilities in Coolum Creek. Roads were paved in the 1920s.

Henry Lawson: “He’s somewhere up in Queensland, the old folk used to say”

Now Coolum Beach is a popular holiday destination. The beach is perfect for swimming and surfing — Julian Wilson comes from Coolum —and it is known as “one of the best breaks in Queensland”. There are always consistent waves and glassy waters, and lifesavers on duty on the beach. The Surf Club provides surfing lessons and all the equipment, from surfboards and wet shirts to sunscreen. There is a wonderful golf course too.

“Now show me in a vision for the wrongs of Earth a cure.”

In summer there are outdoor films and twilight markets. Wouldn’t you like to live in this laidback atmosphere, far from the hurly-burly of all the neighbouring towns, although there is a shopping and entertainment strip, but within easy reach of the amenities they offer? There is a wide choice of restaurants, all serving delicious food. And there is even a beach that welcomes dogs off the leash.

Then stately ships came sailing
From every harbour’s mouth,
And sought the land of promise
That beaconed in the South;
Then southward streamed their streamers
And swelled their canvas full
To speed the wildest dreamers
E’er borne in vessel’s hull.

In fact, Coolum would be a really good place to build or buy. How can you bear to leave? Why don’t you make an appointment with David Scott Design, just to discuss whether you would prefer to build or to transform or to reinvigorate? That’s what David Scott has been doing for the past 30 years — large projects and small ones, all with the same meticulous care.
